Manchester University’s Micro-Mentoring scheme has been devised to offer one opportunity for Research Staff to get the benefits of mentoring, without the usual time commitment required by most mentoring schemes. Instead, researchers are able to arrange a one-off mentoring meeting with an ‘expert’ mentor of their choice at a time that suits both the mentor and the researcher.

If you have a problem or question related to your current or future career, the micro-mentoring scheme may be the answer. Your job is to find someone who you think might be willing and able to give some help or advice, and we’ll give you vouchers for 2 two-course lunches at Christie’s Bistro on Oxford Road. The scheme is flexible enough to accommodate a range of research staff, whatever your current role, situation or discipline, and whatever your career goals or aspirations.

Whoever you are and wherever you want to go, if you have an hour to spare at lunchtime the micro-mentoring scheme is for you.

*Please book both events as attendance is required on both days.*

Delivered by Dr Jamie McDonald, a professional coach and trainer from Skyward Coaching & Development.

Develop a toolkit of approaches to mentor, coach and manage others effectively. A very practical course with plenty of practice to cultivate ways to communicate in one-to-one situations. Course details are below.

This course is open to Research Staff and Academic Staff across the University. You must be able to attend both days. To register book online via ePROG.

About the course
• Do you want to get the best from yourself, your students, researchers and colleagues?
• Do you want to hold useful and engaging annual reviews, appraisals and meetings?
• Do you want to help people take greater responsibility for their development and performance?

If so, you’ll be interested in this two-day workshop that introduces you to the practical use of mentoring skills. The model that you’ll learn has much in common with current thinking on leadership as well as professional and personal development. It provides a powerful complement, and an alternative approach, to traditional management.

Our objectives
This workshop develops a set of skills that are transferable to any situation or relationship and that can have a powerful impact on your personal and career development. More specifically, we aim to develop your ability to:

• Create an effective environment for learning and development
• Work with others to move them into compelling, accountable action
• Facilitate the learning of those around you
• Communicate effectively, using powerful listening and questioning skills

No role plays – we’re after real results
This experiential workshop is delivered by professional coaches and trainers who have been university-based researchers and managers. We want participants to bring about lasting and powerful improvement in performance in real situations. With this in mind, we never ask you to engage in role-playing or to work on invented case studies.

Reflecting this strong, practical focus, the event is ‘hands on’ and highly interactive throughout. Right from the start, you’ll learn by using and observing specific skills and being coached yourself. You’ll receive direct and personalised feedback from the workshop leaders and your peers, and be challenged to try out this new way of working with real people and real situations. To give experience of using the skills at work, you are also challenged to use what you learn between days one and two of the workshop.

To ensure the most effective learning experience, we ask all participants to arrange their diary in advance so they can attend both days fully. This is the kind of rigour that produces real results and a strong learning environment for every participant.
94% of participants recommend the workshop to others. How the event will benefit you depends on how you implement what you learn. Previous participants cite the benefits as:

• Being a better boss, supervisor or mentor
• Avoiding misunderstanding and confrontation, and developing stronger relationships
• Getting people to be responsible and accountable for their own actions
• Feeling more competent and having a better quality of life.

Tuesday 7 February 2012

British Library social science datasets programme

A workshop by John Kaye, Lead Curator – Datasets

1.30 – 4.30pm, Room 0.1.6, Dover Street Building, University of Manchester

This workshop will introduce researchers to the British Library’s dataset programme and provide an overview of dataset activities within Social Sciences. It will show researchers current and planned services the Library is offering to connect researchers with data. It will explore the importance of high quality research data in social science disciplines and through examples it will look at where data fits in the research workflow. It will also look at some tools to carry out data analysis from Online Analysis and Visualization to Geographic Information Systems.

Thursday 1 March 2012

Qualitative Software Planning Seminar

A comparative overview of various software packages which assist in the analysis of qualitative (textual or multimedia) data and/or facilitate the analysis of mixed methods projects.

10.30am – 3.00pm, Room 2.40, Manchester Business School, Booth Street West

A NCRM-funded event jointly organised by methods@manchester and Qualitative Innovations in CAQDAS (QUIC)

Speaker: Christina Silver

Choosing the appropriate analysis software package is an important part of planning any qualitative or mixed method research project. There are a range of options available, but it is not always easy to visualise exactly what a package offers when exploring it for the first time yourself. Equally when asking someone else for their opinion, it is not always easy to know what questions you should be asking. Most of the software packages, which help the researcher to manage qualitative data, are excellent products in one way or several!

———————————————————————

Thursday 8 March 2012 – International Women’s Day

Studying Gender Policy Change Over Time Workshop

11.00 – 3.30, Boardroom, Arthur Lewis Building, University of Manchester

This one day workshop is for those interested in researching gender policy change, and for those interested in studying policy change over time using quantitative or mixed methods. It will provide an introduction to the questions, data and methods which can be used to approach the study of gender policy change over time.

Innovative approaches to methodological challenges facing ageing cohort studies

Workshop 3: Methodological challenges associated with Non-Response and Missing Data in ageing populations

Friday 3rd February 2012, 11:00 – 4:30pm

Institute for Social & Economic Research (ISER), University of Essex

The workshop brings together researchers and experts from different cohort and longitudinal studies with a common interest in dealing with the complexities of non-response and missing data. The workshop includes demonstrations using new software (Stata 12), as well as presentations from major ageing cohort studies.

The Impact Agenda – an ESRC-funded seminar series

Seminar 5: New Frontiers of Impact

Wednesday 22 February 2012, 9.00am – 5.00pm
Manchester Business School

Lead: Ian Miles, Manchester Institute of Innovation Research, Manchester Business School

This seminar series adopts an interdisciplinary perspective to examine and clarify the concept of ‘impact’ in the context of academic research in the humanities and social science. The aim is to identify the processes that influence impact and explore mechanisms that maximise it.

“New frontiers of impact” gives us considerable leeway for exploring how different types of knowledge creation and application may shape the impact agenda, including examination of how these knowledge processes and outcomes may be appropriated and further shaped and developed by users (and co-producers) of different sorts.

UMIP – the University’s intellectual property (IP) commercialisation company would like to make you aware of its IP Awareness Resource, co-developed with Eversheds LLP.

The resource is targeted at academics and research staff and its aim is to increase the awareness of IP and demonstrate the benefits of its commercialisation to the University and the IP generator.

You will find a series of video clips by professionals and academic colleagues on various aspects of IP and its commercialisation. We hope that this resource gives you a valuable insight into the types of IP which can be used to protect novel ideas/inventions and how, for example, IP can be commercialised via spin-out or licence with the help of UMIP.

Also featured is information on IP and Academic Materials and IP within a Research Contract and Consulting environment with links to various forms, process guides and booklets which you may find useful.
