Are you an environmental scientist who could use £1,000?

Environment YES (young entrepreneurs scheme) is an innovative NERC scheme to raise levels of entrepreneurial awareness and provide insight into the innovation process.

It is aimed at all PhD students and post-doctoral researchers working in the environmental sciences; but they do not have to be NERC funded. The benefits to participants are the opportunity to learn and develop transferable skills such as:

• information gathering, communication and presentation skills

• interpersonal skills

• team building and working

• creative thinking

• problem solving

• working to deadlines

• negotiation

• business planning and drafting

Environment YES is run as a competition with a three- day workshop providing training to teams of four or five members on all aspects of technology transfer.

Leading industry figures will attend and make presentations on such areas as:

• financial planning

• intellectual property (IP)

• marketing and evaluation

Participants use this knowledge to prepare and present a business plan for an “imaginary” environmental or environmental technology start-up company, to a panel of experts. The panel will comprise business, financial and academic representatives taking the role of venture capitalists. The science can be theoretical but must fall within the NERC remit.

Two teams from each workshop will be selected to progress through to the final with the opportunity to win the top prize of £1000. Please note the closing date for applications is 27 May 2011. (Please note places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis so early booking is advised).

This competition is free to enter and NERC will cover T&S, plus accommodation and meal costs for the workshop and final. For more information, and key dates please go to http://www.environmentyes.com or contact Emily Medland at yes@nerc.ac.uk or tel: 01793 442611
