There’s still time to sign up for this year’s Pathways careers event, which is taking place on the 10th, 13th and 15th June 2011. Whether you know you want to be an academic and need some tips on getting through an academic interview, or you’re not sure about academia and want to spend a day exploring other options, there will be something at Pathways for you.
During day 1 (June 10th, Renold Building), you’ll have the opportunity to hear from a whole host of people with PhDs who have gone into a range of different careers. You can use the day to find out how people made it into the type of jobs you’re interested in, to explore the potential options open to people with a PhD in your discipline, or to find out whether your career of choice is all it’s cracked up to be. You’ll also have the chance to meet other researchers (from other Universitites as well as Manchester), to spend a day reflecting on your career prospects and to grab a free lunch!
Day two (June 13th, Renold Building) gives you the chance to prepare yourself for the first hurdle in a successful career – getting the job in the first place. Whatever your career plans (academic, non-academic but related to your discipline, or something completely different) you’ll have a chance to find out how people are recruited, to trial your interview presentation, to have a go at answering some typical interview questions and to grill interviewers about the type of questions that they ask and the answers they expect. There will also be a chance to take a psychometirc test if you’re interested in finding out how they work and what your results might reveal to potential employers about you.
During day three (June 15th, Armitage Centre) you have the chance to talk directly to recruiters to find out whether you’d be right for them. This is your opportunity to actually meet representatives from some of the companies you might want to work for, make contacts and maybe even secure yourself an interview. The Graduate Zone will contain employers who are specifically looking for people with PhDs, but there’s also nothing to stop you from talking to any of the other recruiters who are also there to talk to recent graduates.
You can come to as little or as much of the event as you’d like – just make sure you register at: http://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/students/postgraduates/pathways/ In the past there have been up to 500 people attending on some days and we already have over 100 booked this year, so make sure you don’t miss out!
