If you’re currently a PhD student or Early Career Researcher and you’re thinking that you might like to be an academic, it might be worth spending an hour or so over the summer checking out the Careers Service’s (award-winning!) Academic Careers Website: http://www.academiccareer.manchester.ac.uk/
The site has been designed to give you an insight into how people managed to secure their academic job, what the pros and cons of working in academia are, and what an academic job is really all about. There are video clips by academics from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, information on what to expect at academic interviews (including a question bank) and tips on effective job hunting.
If you’re not certain that academia is for you, you can also use the site to help you to make your decision – you can explore whether you have what it takes to become an academic, find out about where to get support as you explore your options and advice on considering the alternatives if you decide that you don’t want to pursue an academic career path.
You can access the site whether you’re currently at Manchester or not.
